Whats good Big City, for the people who need to get familiar with you, let them know who you are, what city u rep, and the movement you stand behind?
Dope. Who were some of your influences coming up early on?
Of course, the late & great Michael Jackson. I also listened to a lot of Jay Z & Biggie
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
If I had to describe myself as an artist in words, I really probably couldn't. I feel like I offer much more than lyrics so I'm the type of artist that you'll have to see, hear, & connect with to really understand who I am.
What kind of identity or image do you want followers of your music to think of when they see you perform?
First & foremost I want to always represent myself as a boss, I've earned that right.... But more than anything I want them to see somebody that wants others to feel good. I want my followers to relate to my music & feel it. So if it's a party song, I want them to feel my energy & turn up with me. If it's a song for the ladies, I want them to connect & wonder what it feels like to hang with Big City for the day.
Aside from being an artist, What made you want to get into the business side of things?
To be honest, I started out on the business side of this. I own my label, Star Status Entertainment. I started with having artists, but I learned that other people don't always have the same drive that you may have & they don't always tend to appreciate other people's money. I took a lot of financial lost & also lost a lot of time dealing with people I thought were hungry as I was, but they weren't. So I said let me see if I can do this myself, & I'm doing it.
Word. Now If you could compare yourself to an already established artist, who would that be and why?
I know it's a cliche saying, but I wouldn't compare myself to anyone else. I have my own style & I'm in my own lane.
Now you've got the single "Star Status Anthem" out as well as the video for "Trap Star" can you tell us about them both, as far as what you were thinking about when they developed and also the campaign behind them?
Well, SSA is just that, the anthem for the label. The song kind of explains how Star Status operates. We make a statement, we have fun. We like other people to have fun with us. That's pretty much what the song is about. Trap Star is one of those songs where if you trap or have trapped, you get it. And if not, you can get the feel of it. All I was really thinking about was that feeling you get when you outside & you in the streets & you getting money, can't nobody tell you that you're not the best at what you do. It makes you feel like when the day is over & you made it home safe, you're the star of the streets.
Alright, What do you think your listeners will get out of your music?
My hope is that my listeners will get an understanding of who I am. I feel like I have a story to tell & every song that I make is a part of who I am in one way or another.
Was there ever a time that you might have been discouraged or you did not want to be involved in music because you came across a hurdle? Is it always smooth sailing?
Of course. I'm an independent artist, so it's difficult to try to focus on funding, being an artist, & all of that at once. A lot of times I've trusted people around me to do work & be an addition to my career, but it didn't work that way. It gets discouraging & stressful, but it is what it is.
What is the most difficult thing you would say that you had to endure in life?
My whole childhood was difficult. I grew up homeless & went to prison at the age of 11. I dropped out of school in 4th grade. I can say that the streets raised me. As a child you don't really tend to understand that your family isn't normal because of a drug addiction or because of decision that your parents are making. You just know that you wanna go to school & play basketball & make friends. That was hard.
What is your overall take on the music industry?
The music industry to me is what you make it to be. It's nothing like what it use to be. Back in the day all you needed was to make a good song. Now you have to know somebody or have a certain amount of money or have a favor that somebody owes you. Personally, I'm gonna treat it like it was before & just keep making good music & letting people love me for being genuine & real in this industry.
How does it feel to be finally getting your break?
Man it's beautiful. I'm a hustler. I've always went for what I've wanted. Now I have to chance to show the whole world who I am & what I have to offer. It feels good.
What’s in the pipeline for Big City?
Everything you can think of. A movie, a book, a clothing line, cologne, liquor... All of it.
What do you hope to do with your music & the whole STAR STATUS MOVEMENT?
I just wanna make Star Status & Big City a household name. I want people to love my music. I want people to see the good things that Star Status does for the community & others. I just want people to know the name & for the good.
Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?
Biggie
What is your ultimate goal at the end of your career?
My ultimate goal is to be a mogul. I wanna feel like everything that I've been through & everything I've done in life was worth it. I wanna make music until my fans are tired of listening. I wanna perform until I can't move anymore. I wanna be a better business man than I am already. I wanna be proud of myself.
